British Household Panel Survey (BHPS)

The British Household Panel Survey began in 1991 and is a multi-purpose study whose unique value resides in the fact that: * it follows the same representative sample of individuals - the panel - over a period of years; * it is household-based, interviewing every adult member of sampled households; * it contains sufficient cases for meaningful analysis of certain groups such as the elderly or lone parent families. The wave 1 panel consists of some 5,500 households and 10,300 individuals drawn from 250 areas of Great Britain. Additional samples of 1,500 households in each of Scotland and Wales were added to the main sample in 1999, and in 2001 a sample of 2,000 households was added in Northern Ireland, making the panel suitable for UK-wide research.

The German Socio-Economic Panel

The SOEP is a wide-ranging representative longitudinal study of private households. It provides information on all household members, consisting of Germans living in the Old and New German States, Foreigners, and recent Immigrants to Germany. The Panel was started in 1984. In 2006, there were nearly 11,000 households, and more than 20,000 persons sampled. Some of the many topics include household composition, occupational biographies, employment, earnings, health and satisfaction indicators. The data are available to researchers in Germany and abroad in SPSS, SAS, Stata, and ASCII format for immediate use. Extensive documentation in English and German is available online.

Panel Study of Income Dynamics

The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), begun in 1968, is a longitudinal study of a representative sample of U.S. individuals (men, women, and children) and the family units in which they reside. It emphasizes the dynamic aspects of economic and demographic behavior, but its content is broad, including sociological and psychological measures. As a consequence of low attrition rates and the success in following young adults as they form their own families and recontact efforts (of those declining an interview in prior years), the sample size has grown from 4,800 families in 1968 to more than 7,000 families in 2001. At the conclusion of 2003 data collection, the PSID will have collected information about more than 65,000 individuals spanning as much as 36 years of their lives. The study is conducted at the Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan and has been made possible through the generous Sponsorship of government agencies, foundations, and other organizations over the years. Since 1982, the study has had an advisory Board of Overseers, appointed by the NSF to foster input from the national community of scholars, researchers, and policy makers. The study is currently directed by a team of Principal Investigators.

Swiss Household Panel (SHP)

The principal aim of the Swiss Household Panel (SHP) is to observe social change, in particular, the dynamics of changing living conditions in the population of Switzerland. The Swiss Household Panel is a joint project run by the SWISS NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, the SWISS FEDERAL STATISTICAL OFFICE and the UNIVERSITY OF NEUCHATEL

UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS)

UKHLS will provide valuable new evidence to inform research on issues of importance to a wide scientific community of interest, and will be the largest study of its type in the world. It will assist with understanding the long term effects of social and economic change, as well as the impact of policy interventions on the general well-being of the UK population. UKHLS will be, in global terms, a unique research resource in terms of size and ambition, and will be a major advance on the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS).
